What Schutz Does Well

Sculptural heels. The label works in shaped, architectural heel forms rather than plain stilettos, which is what makes a simple pump look considered instead of default.

Leather and nubuck. The materials are better than the price suggests, and it shows in how the shoes hold their shape over a season rather than collapsing at the ankle.

Choosing a Pair

Patent pumps are the wardrobe staple. In black or nude, a pump handles work, lunches, dinners and anything that calls for polish without drama. Patent holds up better than matte leather against scuffing, which matters on a shoe you will wear weekly.

Sculpted boots carry the cold months. The welt and nubuck styles layer under trousers or over the top of them, and the shaped heel keeps them from reading as utilitarian.

Evening heels are where the sculptural forms earn their keep. Worth choosing based on the venue rather than the dress, since a shaped block heel handles a lawn or gravel path in a way a stiletto does not.

Fit Notes

Schutz generally runs true to size, though Brazilian sizing means the shoes are cut a touch narrow through the toe box compared to American brands. If you have a wider foot, sizing up a half is the usual solution rather than expecting the leather to give.

Ankle boots run close at the ankle by design, which is what gives them their line. Check the shaft opening if you plan to wear them over anything.

New leather and nubuck both need breaking in. Wear them indoors for an hour or two before an event. It tells you where they rub while you can still do something about it and keeps the sole clean enough to return them if they are wrong.

Care

Nubuck and suede need a protector spray before the first wear, not after the first stain. Once salt or water gets in, it is difficult to reverse.

Patent leather wipes clean with a damp cloth and marks less than matte, but it scuffs against other patent surfaces, so store pairs apart.

Salt and slush ruin leather permanently. If the weather is uncertain, wear something else to the venue and change when you arrive.

Use shoe trees or stuff boots when storing, since leather collapses at the ankle and keeps the crease.
