Proportion is the whole game with bottoms. Volume below wants something fitted above, and volume above wants something slim below. Full on both is a specific look rather than a safe one.
Hem length depends on your shoe, so decide the shoe first. Wide-leg trousers should nearly graze the floor with the heel you plan to wear, which usually means a hem after purchase. Budget for it rather than treating it as a problem.
Fabric weight matters more than colour for making a bottom feel seasonal. A black linen trouser reads as summer. A black wool trouser reads as winter. Same colour, different half of the year.
