What to Wear Over a Gown

This is the question we get most, and most guests solve it badly. You spend weeks choosing a dress and then throw a puffer over it, and the puffer is what appears in the arrival photographs.

A few things to look for. Length matters most. A coat that stops mid-thigh over a floor-length gown creates an awkward line. Look for something that falls to the knee or below, ideally long enough to cover most of the hem.

Sleeve volume matters second. Structured shoulders and full sleeves on a gown will not fit inside a slim-cut coat. If your dress has either, size up or choose a looser silhouette.

Neutral beats matching. A camel, black, ivory or grey coat works with everything you will wear it over across a season. A coat matched to one dress works once.

Faux fur reads formal. It is the easiest way to look finished over eveningwear, and it handles a cold walk from the car better than most tailored options.

If you have a winter wedding or holiday event on the calendar, buy the coat when you buy the dress rather than the week before.
