The Case for a Jumpsuit

A jumpsuit is the most underused option in occasion dressing. It reads as considered rather than conventional, it photographs beautifully, and it solves the practical problems a gown creates. You can sit, dance, climb into a car and walk across gravel without managing a hem.

The reason more people do not wear them is uncertainty about whether they count as formal enough. In most cases they do, and the sections below cover when.

Jumpsuits by Dress Code

Black tie. A wide-leg jumpsuit in a formal fabric with an elegant neckline is appropriate at almost any black-tie event outside the most traditional. Satin, crepe and embellished styles carry the weight a gown would. What makes it work is the leg width, since a wide leg reads as a gown at a glance while a narrow one reads as trousers.

Black-tie optional and formal. Entirely appropriate, and one of the more interesting choices in a room of gowns.

Cocktail attire. This is where jumpsuits are easiest. A tailored or embellished style needs no justification.

Rehearsal dinners, welcome parties and after-parties. Ideal. A jumpsuit handles a long evening better than a dress and looks intentional in every photograph.

Fit Notes

Torso length is the thing to check, and the thing most people do not. A jumpsuit that is short in the body pulls at the shoulders and the crotch simultaneously, and no amount of hemming fixes it. If you are tall through the torso, prioritise styles with adjustable straps or a defined waist seam.

The leg hem is almost always cut for a heel. Decide your shoe before you alter anything, and expect to hem.

Consider how you will get in and out of it. This sounds trivial until you are at a wedding for six hours. Back zippers and halter necks are the ones to think through.

A defined waist is what separates a jumpsuit that reads as eveningwear from one that reads as a onesie. Belted, seamed or fitted through the middle, it should show a waist somewhere.

Styling Notes

Treat it exactly as you would a gown. One focal accessory, elegant heels, a compact clutch. The silhouette is already doing something unexpected, so the rest of the look should be quiet.

Wide-leg styles suit a heel with some height, since the hem needs the lift to hang correctly.

Statement earrings work particularly well here, especially with a halter or high neckline.
