One-pieces are where swimwear has gotten most interesting. Sculpted seaming, plunging necklines, cutouts and open backs have moved them well past the practical option, and they are the easiest thing to wear straight from the water to lunch with a skirt or wide-leg trouser thrown over them.
Bikinis run from clean minimal shapes to textured, ruched and structured styles. Buying separates rather than sets means you can size the top and bottom independently, which solves a problem most women have and few shops make easy.
Cover-ups and kaftans are what turn a swimsuit into an outfit. Worth buying at the same time rather than improvising with a shirt from your suitcase.
Swimwear runs closer to the body than anything else we carry, so the size chart matters more here than it does elsewhere. Each product page lists the fit and the size the model is wearing.
If you are between sizes, size down in stretch-heavy styles and size up in structured or underwired ones. Support comes from construction rather than fabric, so if you want real support, look for underwire, boning or a wide band rather than assuming a thicker material will do it.
For bikini tops, check whether the style is adjustable at both the neck and the back. Adjustable at one point only limits how much you can fine-tune the fit.
White and pale swimwear becomes more sheer when wet, which is obvious in principle and surprising in practice. Check the lining before you buy if you plan to swim in it rather than sit in it.
Textured and ribbed fabrics hide more than flat ones and hold their shape longer through a season of chlorine and salt.
Rinse in cold water after every wear and dry flat rather than hanging. Sunscreen, chlorine and heat are what actually destroy swimwear, not the swimming.
The general guidance is one swimsuit for every two days, so you always have a dry one. Choose pieces in a related palette and your cover-ups, sandals and jewelry will work across all of them rather than one each.
