Cocktail and statement rings are the occasion piece. Worn on the right hand with a clean dress, a single bold ring does the work of a bracelet and a necklace combined. This is the piece to choose when your neckline rules out everything else.
Stacking sets give you flexibility. Worn together they read as one considered look, worn separately they carry daytime and work. Mixing widths within a stack looks better than matching them.
Bands and simple styles are what you reach for when the rest of the outfit is already doing something. They finish a hand without competing.
Pick one hand and commit. Statement rings on both hands reads as busy, especially in photographs where your hands appear holding a glass or a clutch.
If you already wear engagement or wedding rings, build around them rather than against them. A stack on the opposite hand balances the look, and matching the metal keeps it coherent.
Scale matters against the rest of the jewelry. A large cocktail ring with statement earrings and a bold necklace is three focal points fighting each other. Choose one and let the rings support it, or let the ring be the statement and keep the earrings quiet.
Metal should relate to the dress. Gold warms ivory, champagne, cocoa, citrine and blush. Silver and pewter suit navy, emerald, black and cool-toned metallics. Mixed metal pieces solve the problem entirely and are worth owning for that reason.
Ring sizing is the hardest thing to get right online, and there are a few things that help.
Fingers swell through the day and in warm weather, so measure in the late afternoon rather than first thing. A ring that fits perfectly in the morning can be tight by evening.
Wide bands fit tighter than thin ones at the same size. If you are buying something broad, consider going up a half size.
If you are between sizes, size up. A ring slightly loose is wearable. A ring too tight is not, and resizing costs more than the difference.
Stacking sets should be ordered in the same size unless the widths vary considerably.
Take rings off before hand cream, dish washing and swimming. Chlorine is particularly hard on plated finishes and stone settings.
Store pieces separately rather than loose in a dish, since stones scratch metal and settings loosen when knocked together.
Check prongs on anything with a stone once or twice a year. Losing a stone is nearly always preventable and almost never noticed until it happens.
