Choosing a Shape

The right hat depends less on trend than on your face and the setting, and there are only a few things worth knowing.

Wide-brim styles suit almost everyone and do the most for sun coverage. They work for resort, garden events, races and outdoor weddings. The wider the brim, the more the rest of the outfit should stay simple.

Fedoras and structured crowns carry everyday and travel. They read as considered without effort and pack better than most shapes.

Boaters and flat crowns are the resort classic. Crisp, clean, and photograph well against water and greenery.

Occasion and event hats are their own category. If you are attending races, a garden party or a wedding where hats are expected, the hat becomes the focal point and everything else should support it.

Felt for cold weather, straw and raffia for warm. This matters more than colour for making a hat feel seasonal. A black straw hat still reads as summer.

Wearing a Hat to an Event

If the invitation calls for a hat, it is the statement. Keep the dress clean, skip the necklace, and let the earrings stay small or disappear entirely under the brim.

Consider whether the event is seated and indoor at any point. A wide brim is a genuine problem at a dinner table, and knowing whether you will need to take it off changes what you should do with your hair.

For outdoor weddings, check with the couple or the invitation. A large brim behind the ceremony can block the view for people behind you, and some venues ask guests to keep hats modest.

Fit and Care

Head sizes vary more than people expect, and most designer hats run in a single size with an internal band. If it feels loose, a hat sizing tape inside the band solves it in a minute.

Store hats crown-down or on a shelf rather than resting on the brim, which distorts the shape permanently.

Straw hats mind humidity and rain. Felt minds heat. Neither should live in a car.

For travel, pack a hat crown-up and fill it with soft items. Anything with a stiff brim is better carried than checked.
