Choosing a Piece for Your Occasion

For black tie and galas, the floor-length gowns with structured bodices are the natural choice. Formal without drama, and they photograph cleanly under evening light.

For formal weddings and evening receptions, the column and A-line silhouettes work particularly well. Substantial enough for the dress code, quiet enough that you are not competing with the wedding party.

For cocktail attire and country club celebrations, the midi styles carry the same construction at a more versatile length.

For rehearsal dinners and formal luncheons, the shorter and midi pieces are the right register.

Styling Notes

Structured bodices leave a clean line at the neckline, which is where statement earrings do their best work. A necklace often competes with the seaming rather than complementing it.

Because the dresses are already doing something structural, keep the accessories simple. One focal piece, a plain clutch, a considered shoe.

For a cold-weather event, a structured coat or a proper wrap. The clean lines of these dresses are ruined faster than most by a casual layer thrown over the top.

Sizing and Fit

SAU LEE generally runs true to size, though the structured bodices fit close by design. That is the construction working, not a sizing error.

Size for your bust and ribcage on anything corseted, since that is where the boning sits and where the fit is least forgiving. The waist and hip can be taken in easily. A bodice that does not close cannot.

Gowns are cut for a heel, so budget for a hem if you are under about 5’5″ or plan to wear something lower. Decide the shoe before you alter.

Structured bodices do not alter well through the bust or shoulders. Hems, waists and side seams do.

Care

Dry clean only. Internal boning and structure are damaged by water and by machine agitation.

Store on a padded hanger with the bodice supported, or folded flat for heavier pieces. A thin hanger distorts the shoulder line over time.

Zip fully before storing, or the panels relax out of shape.
